Hui’an County, lying to the middle of the coutheastern coast of Fujian Province, separated by the sea strait with Taiwan, and is one of the open counties of the Golden Angle in the southern Fujian. The county, set up during the Northern Song Dynasty, now belongs to Quanzhou City, and now it administers 16 villages and towns.

    Hui’an stone carving has originated in the Yellow River valle. The early Hui’an stone carving skill was based on the construction, brick caving, earth carving, wood carving on the construction materials. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, stone carving had been perfected day by day. And products of the stone carving were circulated in markets. Hui’an’s construction and carving craftsmen have traveled everywhere and spread their works and skill to the whole country and southeastern Asia. According to historical record, the stone carving had been bought to Taiwan since the early Qing Dynasty. Nowadays the stone crafts of “Three Heroes Fight Against Lv Bu” in Longshan Tmeple of Taipei and “Empty City Trick” are life like and dazzlingly brilliant. There are southern Fujian’s stone carving in many temples and citizen houses. Since the founding of PRC, Hui’an stone carving market has continuously developed. Traditional carving skills were combined with modern scientific methods, absorbing elements in western culture. The skills were further classified as round carving, float carving line carving, shadow carving, deposit and coloring carving and garden carving, construction material carving, household utensils carving and so on.
