Dongyang--City of Chinese Woodcarving
Starting from Tang dynasty, Dongyang woodcarving has a history of over 1,000 years. In 2002, Dongyang was named “Town of Chinese Woodcarving” by Chinese Light Industry Federation. There are about 2,700 woodcarving enterprises in Dongyang and 134,000 employed persons. In 2008, gross output of woodcarving was 14.52 billion Yuan, tax 348 million Yuan and export 1350 million Yuan, respectively taking 23%, 13.9% and 18% of Dongyang City.
Dongyang woodcarving is a kind of plane carving whose products can be combined regardless of their sizes. Carving techniques can be simple or complex. Dongyang woodcarving is widely used from palaces and temples to decorative items and ornaments. Transcending other genres, Dongyang woodcarving has a wide-scale market, which is also the source of Dongyang woodcarving’s continuous reproduction.
